How MagGlass uses the camera, microphone, and network

This policy describes the current MagGlass apps for iPhone and Android.

Last updated: September 23, 2026

Summary

MagGlass uses camera and microphone access for accessibility features. Camera images are processed on the device. Optional online conversation, speech and product lookup use network services described below. MagGlass has no advertising or third-party analytics.

Camera and text processing

The camera provides the magnified preview, barcode detection, and visible-text recognition. MagGlass does not upload camera images. Camera and OCR image processing occur on the device.

Microphone and speech recognition

When online voice is available, temporary voice recordings, conversation requests, text to speak, and recognized text included in a conversation are sent through the authenticated SEL service to OpenAI for transcription, responses and synthetic speech. Camera images are not sent. Temporary audio files on the device are deleted after use or cancellation. When online voice is unavailable, MagGlass uses installed device speech services, which may themselves process data online according to their settings. The Stop control ends the current listening or speaking action. To prevent duplicate charges on retries, SEL temporarily caches encrypted AI responses and generated speech for up to 24 hours; expired cache entries are removed during subsequent service activity. OpenAI processes submitted data under its own API data policies.

Shopping Mode network access

Barcode decoding is local. Android product lookup sends the barcode and language through SEL to Open Food Facts-family databases; iPhone product lookup contacts those databases directly. No camera image is sent.

Photos access

On iPhone, add-only Photos permission may be requested when the user chooses to save a camera capture. MagGlass does not read or upload the photo library.

Preferences and diagnostics

Preferences and shopping inventory are stored locally. Android keeps a bounded local diagnostic log that you may choose to export and share; it is not sent automatically. SEL stores a pseudonymous installation fingerprint, authorization information and usage counters to control access and service limits. Provider credentials are not included in the app. Contact support about service access or deletion requests.

No advertising or tracking

MagGlass has no advertising, third-party analytics or cross-app tracking. Optional accounts use a username, salted password hash and secure session credentials. SEL stores credit balances and verified purchase records. Amazon, Apple or Stripe processes payments; SEL does not receive full card details. Personal OpenAI keys are encrypted on SEL servers and are never returned or logged. Delete your account and saved key through account settings; minimal purchase records remain to prevent duplicate grants.
